Not only does Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 preserve the weighty and satisfying feel of the original, but it also improves on the formula, adding a parrying system that rewards well-timed blocks with meaty executions and staggering attacks. In our hands-on with an early build of the game, we got to experience an early mission first-hand. Much like its predecessor, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a third-person shooter that trades chest-high walls and cover mechanics for gory melee executions and over-the-top futuristic weaponry that would be at home in Doom. Though we don't yet know exactly what shape Space Marine 2's story will take, we do know that there will be plenty of threats for Titus to battle his way through with his trusty chainsword and bolt pistol. Having fought the cunning Orks in the first game, it looks as though the xenomorphic Tyranids are taking center stage in this latest adventure. The aliens, monsters, and sinister cultists populating the setting are enough to give even the best horror games a run for their money. Taking place in Games Workshop's ironically grim sci-fi setting, Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 takes place against a dark backdrop of eternal war and authoritarian horror. Fortunately, if our hands-on with a preview build of the game is anything to go by, it looks as though Saber's take on Space Marine's meaty third person combat is just as brutally satisfying as the original. Thanks to a sequence of corporate acquisitions, Saber Interactive now finds itself responsible for the series and is attempting to recapture the magic. Something of a cult classic, this game offered a meaty and satisfying third-person action game, with plenty of engaging combat setpieces and sci-fi drama. It's been over 10 years since the first Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine graced our screens.
